Most commonly used VoIP protocols:
H.323
Is the ITU umbrella standard for Multimedia Communications (Voice,
Video and Document Sharing) on LAN and WAN. H.323 is the first
and most established VoIP standard. The strong point is interoperability;
the downside is that it is complex and heavy.
SIP:
Session Initiation Protocol
Is the IETF standard with an HTML-like philosophy (text based,
flexible and extensible). SIP is the strategic VoIP protocol for
many vendors and operators. Uses other protocols for Session Description
MGCP:
Media Gateway Control Protocol
IETF standard for controlling media gateways. MGCP is combined
with "packages" or other protocols for signaling. There
are many derivatives (NCS, H.248, MEGACO, SIGTRAN). MGCP is mostly
used in carrier/provider networks with centralized control (softswitch
networks).

H.323
IP Telephony Gatekeeper
The
MultiVOIP Gatekeeper is a complementary product to the voice over
IP gateways. This hardware and software solution provides the
power to define and control how H.323 voice traffic is managed
over IP networks.
- Reliable
call control services for registered H.323 endpoints
- Standards
based interoperability
- Robust
bandwidth management for superior QoS
With
the MultiVOIP Gatekeeper, network managers have the ability to
configure, monitor and manage the activity of registered network
endpoints. In addition, managers can set policies and control
network resources, such as bandwidth usage, to ensure optimal
implementation. It also provides seamless interoperability between
PBX dial plans and IP-based terminals. And, it provides call centres
with the ability to perform needs based call routing.
